Newton, MA - The Lasell College women's soccer team opened their 2012 campaign with a strong debut, defeating the visiting Becker College Hawks 11-3 in their season opener. Eight different players put their name in the scoring column for Lasell, led by Molly Fitzgerald (Haverhill, Mass.), Bridget Lynch (Dover, N.H.), and Kelsey Evje (Cranston, R.I.) who tallied two goals apiece in the victory.
Fitzgerald opened the scoring in the 15th minute, and Lasell tacked on four more goals courtesy of Sam Peck (Woodbury, CT), a second Fitzgerald goal and goals by twins Bridget and Kayla Lynch (Dover, N.H.) to open up a 5-0 lead in the opening 34 minutes.
Becker got on the board when Alycia Dery (Millville, Mass.) got behind the Laser defense and beat Lasell's starting keeper Leah Pappalardo (Whitman, Mass.) to cut the Lasell lead to 5-1 at intermission.
The Lasers netted the first four goals of the second half to build a 9-1 lead, before Becker closed with two of the final four goals for the 11-3 result.
Lasell finished with 20 shots, 15 of which were on frame, compared to seven shots for the visiting Hawks to aid their cause. Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) took the loss in goal for Becker, Pappalardo and Amy DelloRusso (Plymouth, Mass.) each stopped a shot apiece while playing 45 minutes each in the Lasell victory.
Becker College will face-off with Castleton State College in the Lasell College Kick-Off Classic consolation game on Sunday September 2nd at 12pm, while Lasell will take on the Blue Jays of Elizabthown College in Sunday's 2:30pm championship match.
