Lasell Recognizes Seniors and Announces 2012-13 Department Awards
Lasell held their annual athletic banquet on Monday evening, honoring 35 senior athletes for their contributions to Lasell Athletics.
Newton, Mass. (5/7/2013) – The Lasell College athletic department hosted their first annual senior awards banquet on Monday May 6th, recognizing their senior athletes for their outstanding intercollegiate careers. Lasell honored 35 senior student-athletes for their performances during the 2012-13 academic year and over the course of their Lasell career.
Lasell presented the Female Athlete of the Year to senior women's lacrosse player Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, Mass.). During the 2013 season, she ranked first in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and ninth in the nation in assists with 53. Her 62 goals scored was the third best mark in the GNAC and her 115 total points was the third highest total nationally for the 2013 season. During her senior season Ashley became the third player in program history to record 200 goals, the first player to reach the 100 career assist mark, and she broke the school record for career points, totaling 349 in her Lasell career. She set the Lasell College career mark for games played and a game started with 70, and was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference First Team. Ashley helped lead her team to their third consecutive appearance in the GNAC Championship game, their second straight 15 win season, and the first women's lacrosse GNAC Championship and NCAA tournament appearance in the program's history.
Men's basketball player Sean Bertanza (Seymour, Conn.) was named the Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2012-13 season. He averaged 20.6 points per game, including 28.7 points per game in Great Northeast Athletic Conference games. Sean moved into seventh on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,162 career points. During his senior campaign he moved into sixth place in school history in games started, fifth place in three point field goals made, and fourth on the all-time steals and free throws made career lists. His career scoring average climbed to 19.7 points per game, the second best mark in the history of the program and he became the program's all-time leader in minutes played per game. After being named to the All-GNAC Third team following his sophomore year and the All-GNAC Second Team after his junior year he was named a member of the All-GNAC First Team for the 2012-13 season.
The Lasell College Scholar-Athlete of the year is presented annually to one female and one male student-athlete who have achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in their career at Lasell College. The recipient must have been a member of their intercollegiate athletic team for their entire career and have completed their final season of athletic eligibility.
The honoree for male Scholar-Athlete of the Year was men's lacrosse player Dan Clark (Scarborough, Maine). An exercise science major, Dan is a candidate for Summa cum Laude honors in the class of 2013.
The honoree for female scholar-athlete of the year was cross country runner Christina Annicelli (North Easton, Mass.). A member of the Lasell College honors program, Christina is majoring in English with a concentration in secondary education and is a candidate for Cum Laude honors in the class of 2013.
