Norwich Posts 16-7 Win over Lasell Women's Lacrosse
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University posted a 16-7 Great Northeast Athletic Conference win over the Lasell College women’s lacrosse team in their final regular season matchup of the 2010 season on Monday afternoon.
Lasell’s freshman midfielder Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) and senior midfielder Andrea Ward (Hingham, MA) combined for all seven of the Lasers goals. Slattery found the back of the Cadets’ net four times and dished out one assist to lead the way for Lasell (8-8, 4-4 GNAC) with five points. Ward chipped in three goals and one assist. Senior midfielder April McGrath (Willow Grove, PA) tallied one assist in the contest.
The Cadets got on top with a 6-0 run over a 21 minute span before the Lasers got on the scoreboard. Norwich started their streak just 13 seconds into the contest as Mollie Fitzpatrick won the opening draw and tallied her first marker of the game.
Fitzpatrick scored again at the 27:58 mark, and Kathleen Hennessy followed up that tally with her first goal of the contest 21 seconds later, giving Norwich an early 3-0 edge.
Slattery broke up the initial 6-0 stretch with back-to-back unassisted goals between the nine and seven minute mark, but a final Hennessy mark put the Cadets ahead 7-2 at the half.
The Norwich offense did not abate in the second half, netting the first eight goals of the period to build a commanding 15-2 cushion with 8:09 to play in the contest.
Ward’s first marker of the contest halted the Cadets potent offense with 7:03 on the clock. Ward and Slattery both scored two goals apiece in the final 2:03 to account for the final margin.
Norwich goalkeepers Meghan Kennedy and Kellie Pickel split time in the Cadets’ cage with Kennedy making one save and Pickel stopping three shots. Lindsay Cahoon (Falmouth, MA) made eight saves in the Lasell net.
The Cadets (7-6, 7-1 GNAC) finish their league slate in a three-way tie with Emerson and St. Joseph’s (Maine) for first place in the conference standings. Standings for the GNAC post-season tournament have yet to be determined.
