No. 7 Rivier Defeats Lasell, 3-0

NASHUA, NH-Lasell College was defeated by the 7th ranked team in Division III men's volleyball, Rivier College, on Monday night, 3-0. The Raiders won in straight sets, 30-18, 30-16, 30-23.
The Raiders used a diverse offense that combined for an impressive .477 hitting percentage as a team (49-8-86). Jared Andreozzi (Barrington, RI) and Matt Ferreira (Lincoln, RI) combined for 21 kills to lead the Raiders attack.
Lasell hit a .241 clip as a team (39-18-87), and was led by freshman outside hitter Spencer Parker (Newington, CT). Parker had a game-high 12 kills, adding six digs and two blocks.
Senior outside Andy Cass (Wakefield, RI) was Lasell's next leading attacker. Cass put down seven kills, on eight total attempts, with just one error for a 75% hitting percentage.
Setter Brendan McGourn (Southington, CT) controlled the Lasers offense for 27 assists and libero Max Vaughan (Wethersfield, CT) picked up a game-high seven digs on defense.
The Lasers fell behind early in the first set, 10-4, before coming back as close as a five point deficit (20-15) after kills by Matt Roberts (Agawam, MA) and Micah Aiu (Honolulu, HI). Unfortunately, Lasell would score just three more points in the set as the Raiders went on a 10-3 stretch to finish set one.
Set two was a similar to the first as Lasell dropped into arrears of the Raiders, 12-4, in the opening points. The Raiders would extend their lead to ten points, at 17-7, at which point Lasell was unable to close the gap, falling 30-16 in the second game.
In the final set of the evening, Lasell held a narrow lead, 10-9, after a kill by Dan Rogers (Belchertown, MA). However, the Raiders came back to tie the game, and eventually take the lead once more shortly thereafter, 11-10. After three ties between the 12th and 14th points, Rivier made a final push and took the edge, 15-14. Lasell was able to keep the game close, but was unable to triumph in the set, eventually succumbing 30-23.
The Lasers are back in non-conference action at Daniel Webster College on Wednesday, March 3rd, at 7:00 p.m.
