Lasers Outlast Chargers; Rally for Two-Point Fifth Set Victory
WEST HAVEN, CT The Lasell College men's volleyball team picked up a dramatic five set victory over non-divisional rivals University of New Haven on Friday night, 3-2, at the Charger Gymnasium. Lasell produced wins in the first two sets (30-24, 30-27) before the Chargers rallied to take sets three and four by identical scores of 31-29. Lasell came back to secure the match victory with a tight 15-13 deciding set.

Lasell produced wins in the first two sets (30-24, 30-27) before the Chargers rallied to take sets three and four by identical scores of 31-29. Lasell came back to secure the match victory with a tight 15-13 deciding set.
Lasell held a narrow margin in nearly every statistical category across the board. The Lasers hit a .197 clip as a team (62-32-152), as opposed to New Haven's .173 (61-33-162), picked up 55 digs to UNH's 47, and held a 56-54 margin in assists. The Chargers outdid the Lasers with 13 team blocks, while Lasell produced 10, and managed a slight eight-to-seven advantage in service aces.
Sophomore setter Brendan McGourn (Southington, CT) set up a strong offensive attack with three Lasell hitters putting down ten or more kills. McGourn put up 51 assists in the five sets, while also adding nine digs, four aces, and three blocks.
Spencer Parker (Newington, CT), Dan Rogers (Belchertown, MA) and Micah Aiu (Honolulu, HI) each notched double-figures in the kills column for Lasell. Parker led the team with 17 kills in five games, averaging 3.4 kills per set. He also put down four blocks and collected nine digs. Rogers finished the day with 12 kills, hitting 45.0% in five sets, and adding five assisted blocks. Aiu tallied ten kills, six digs, and three blocks.
Harry Strobel (Westport, CT) aided in the Lasers triumph, slamming down nine kills and digging five Charger attacks. Freshman libero Max Vaughan (Wethersfield, CT) dug up 10 defensive balls for Lasell.
The Lasers are now 13-5 this season, as they head back into Great Northeast Athletic Conference action, facing league leaders Rivier College, Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in Nashua, New Hampshire. The Raiders are currently ranked 7th in the nation in Division III men's volleyball, and have an 18-4 overall record.
