Wildcats Overcome Deficit to Tie with Lasell
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI- Johnson & Wales University overcame a 3-1 deficit late in the second half leading to a 3-3 tie against the Lasell College men's soccer team on Saturday. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tie left Lasell at 6-1-2 this season but still unbeaten at 3-0-1 in the conference, while Johnson & Wales lands at 3-6-1 (1-2-1 GNAC).
Adam Luciano (Fairfield, CT) and Mike Skelton (Conway, NH) put Lasell on the board in the 15th minute after Noel Rix (Rye, NH) was fouled just over the midfield line. Skelton drove the free kick on target and Luciano headed in the pass for the first goal of the game, at 14:50.
Lasell's lead held until the 37th minute when O'Kyle Corddidon (Selden, NY) evened the score on a direct kick off his own from 25 yards out. The 1-1 draw stayed in place through halftime.
Skelton wasted no time in the second half putting Lasell back on top. The junior forward lodged his 10th goal of the year reacting off a deflection from a Wildcat defender just 22 seconds into play. Jacob Allen (Westminster, MA) added a third tally at 68:41 to put Lasell at a good distance, 3-1, with just over 20 minutes to play. Allen's goal was scored with an assist from Skelton.
The tides changed ten minutes after Allen's goal when Johnson & Wales' Sam Maker (Naples, ME) settled a turnover by Lasell and fired off a shot from just outside the 18. More bad luck followed for Lasell when an own goal was scored with under ten minutes to play which tied up the contest, 3-3.
Two overtime stanzas came and went without a change in score although both teams had excellent scoring chances. Lasell goalkeeper Aren Moorman (Somerset, NJ) and Wildcat keeper Ryan Dzierawski (Oakland, MI) settled for the conference stalemate through 110 minutes of action. Moorman made eight saves in the game while Dzierawski collected seven saves.
Lasell will head to Norwich for another GNAC contest Tuesday, October 4th, slated for 3:30 p.m.
