Nashua, NH- Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA) picked up Lasell’s fifth conference win in seven innings of work on Tuesday night with a 6-4 triumph over Rivier College in the first game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Lasers fell in game two, 6-3, bringing their season slate to 5-21, and their conference mark to 5-9.
In game one, Lasell jumped out with a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA) brought Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA) around the bags with an RBI single. After two more innings without a change in score, Rivier rebounded with a three-run fourth to take the lead, 3-1. Lasell recovered the edge in the sixth inning, with five hits, scoring four runs for the final outcome.
Cavanagh went 3-for-4 in the game with one run and one RBI. Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, MA) had two hits, in as many chances, with two runs, including a triple. Herb Chappell (Salem, CT) hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, while also making 10 putouts defensively.
Mike Mahoney fanned three Raider batters in the event.
The Lasers started the game with a two-hit, two-run top of the first, but five runs in the bottom half of the inning by the hosts dug Lasell into a deficit they did not recover from. Lasell produced just three hits in the second game, led by Matt Mahoney who went 2-for-4 with one run. Josh Sullivan (Rockland, MA) added a double, a run, and an RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Matt Pitts (Stoneham, MA) was struck with the loss, striking out four in six innings on the mound.
Lasell will match up with Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday, April 21st in their next contest. The Lasers and the Buccaneers will meet on Lasell’s home field at Brandeis University at 3:30 p.m.
