NEWTON, MA-- The Albertus Magnus Falcons picked up a pair of GNAC victories over the Lasell College Lasers in Great Northeast Athletic Conference Baseball action, Saturday afternoon at Brandeis University. The Lasers fell 4-3 in game one, then dropped the second game 5-1. Lasell now holds a 2-11 overall, 2-4 GNAC record while the Falcons improve their overall record to 6-12, and 4-2 in the conference.
Albertus got on the board early in the top of the first inning which left the Lasers to play catch up throughout the game. The inning began when Kyle Calechman singled and advanced to third on a Laser error. Erik Suraci hit into a double-play but Calechman scored on the play. Lasell’s sophomore hurler Joshua Sullivan (Rockland, MA) struck out his final batter of the inning, looking.
Four Lasers, Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA), Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA), Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, MA), and Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT), delivered hits over the first three innings of the game but Lasell was not able to create runs off the plays.
The Falcons added two runs in the fourth inning. Suraci made it on base on another Laser error and Matt Caputo launched a double into left field to position the scoring runners. A base hit by Peter Rogan into shallow right field scored the runs.
Caught in a three run deficit in the fifth, Lasell used two hits and one error to plate their first run. A two-base hit by Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA) set up the run, and Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA) finished it with a single into the outfield to bring Mahoney home.
Lasell closed the gap to 3-2 in the next inning when Stachura shot a sacrifice fly into deep center field, allowing Lentini to score. Both teams scored one run in the seventh, which was not enough for Lasell, and Albertus to secured the first of the two GNAC games.
Suraci and Rogan each picked up two RBI in the opening game and Calechman and BJ Senna produced two hits each for the victors. Charles Chancio was awarded the win on the mound, retiring five Laser batters in the process.
Sullivan struck out eight Falcons and allowed just one earned run in the defeat. Lentini went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored one run. Matt Mahoney added two hits, including a double, and one run.
The second game began with a 1-1 stalemate after the first inning. Suraci opened the game with a home run to start the Falcons in the right direction. Albertus then gave up a run in the bottom of the inning, when James O’Neil (San Diego, CA) singled through the left side and sent Stachura home.
The visitors then struck again in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings with one run in each frame. The Lasers produced just four hits in the remaining innings.
Senna pitched a complete game for the Falcons, striking out nine en route to the Falcons second GNAC win of the day. Mike Mahoney was charged with the loss in five and a third innings, fanning five batters along the way.
Rogan and Malcolm Mendez each went 2-for-3 for Albertus Magnus and Suraci added two hits, two RBI, and one run.
O’Neil went 2-for-3 for Lasell with one RBI and Stachura ended the second game going 2-for-4 with one run.
