Falcons Pull out 9-7 win over Lasell in the 7th to Move onto GNAC Quarterfinals
New Haven, Conn.- Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, Mass.) cracked a three run homer in the top of the sixth inning to give Lasell College a 7-6 lead in the first round of the GNAC baseball tournament, but the Albertus Magnus Falcons retaliated with three final runs to steal a 9-7 victory to move onto the league quarter finals.
The Falcons went up 3-0 before the Lasers scored their first run in the third inning. Mike Grenier (Fitchburg, Mass.) took advantage of two errors to make his way to third base after singling to get on base. Matt Mahoney (Rockland, Mass.) tripled to push Grenier in, putting the Lasers on the board.
After Albertus went ahead 6-1 in the fourth, Lasell's Josh Sullivan (Rockland, Mass.) knocked a two-RBI single to bring the score to 6-3, and Mike Mahoney score unearned in the sixth to close within two runs.
Lentini's three-RBI homerun gave Lasell their first and only lead of the game in the sixth, but the edge was short-lived as the Falcons returned to tie things up in the second half of the stanza.
After scoring the deciding runs in the seventh inning, Albertus Magnus claimed the 9-7 victory and moved onto the GNAC quarter finals.
Matt Mahoney, Sullivan, Lentini, and Conor Cavanaugh (Quincy, Mass.) each had two hits for the visiting Lasers.
Sullivan struck out six in 5.1 innings allowing just four earned runs, while Rich Balgowan (Hamilton, NJ) struck out two more after relieving Sullivan in 2.2 innings.
The Lasers ended the day at 10-22, and finished at 5-9 in the conference during their inaugural season in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
Lasell has two final non-conference games before they finish the 2009 season.
