2010-2011 Athletic Banquet
On Monday, May 2nd, the Lasell College athletic department put on their annual banquet to celebrate an exceptional year for the Lasers. The Athletic Center was transformed to entertain 450 guests in the form of student athletes, parents, faculty, staff, and Lasell College administration.
Highlights of the year were noted by each head coach and the unveiling of two new championship banners were released. Women’s soccer received the first ever NCAA banner for a women’s team after winning the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship in the fall and earning their first bid to the big dance. Men’s Volleyball was recognized for their first ever appearance in a post-season tournament, the ECAC North tournament, after reaching the GNAC finals and finishing the year with the best record in program history (22-16).
In addition, four annual awards were given out to the Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Male and Female Athlete of the Year.
This year’s scholar athletes of the year were Stephen Petrin of the men’s soccer and track & field teams and Kelly Silvia of the softball team. The Lasers athlete of the year awards went to Javon Williams of the men’s basketball team and Tina Canavan of the women’s lacrosse team.
The criteria for the Scholar Athlete of the Year award are as follows; the student athlete whom has completed their last season of eligibility, has been a four year member of a varsity team, has played in at least 50% of eligible games, and has the highest overall cumulative GPA of all senior athletes.
Stephen is a two-sport athlete at Lasell College, having played four seasons with the men’s soccer team and a member of the Track & Field team since its inaugural NCAA season in 2009-2010.
Steve has been a major contributor to the men’s soccer team for four years earning significant time on the field. During that time, Stephen played primarily as a center-midfielder before being called upon to change positions to that of a center-back for the 2010 season. Over his career, Stephen has played in 69 total games, producing six goals and seven assists for 19 total career points. He has also scored three game-winning goals in his career and was a GNAC Player of the Week in 2010 and was selected as a GNAC Third Team All-Conference honoree in 2009. Stephen epitomizes the true essence of leadership, both on and off the field, and was named captain in his junior year.
With the Track & Field team, Steve has helped to set two All-Time records in both the 4x200 relay and the 4x400 relay. Steve anchored both relay squads, setting the 4x400 record in February of 2010 and the 4x200 record this season in February of 2011. He also has one 1st place finish at the MIT Invitational this season, finishing the 200 meter dash in 24.33 seconds.
Steve will graduate in May with a degree in Entrepreneurship and is a candidate for Latin honors.

The Student Athlete of the Year award is given out to the two Lasell athletes whom have been a member of a varsity team for at least two years, have been a starter or first reserve playing in at least 75% of eligible contests, and have made a significant impact on the team. The selected athlete must have also earned off-campus recognition for athletic achievements.
This year’s male student athlete of the year award went to junior men’s basketball player, Javon Williams.
Javon Williams had another phenomenal year with the Lasell College men’s basketball team. The junior forward was selected as a member of the GNAC First Team All-Conference, was honored three times on the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week, was twice an ECAC New England Regional Player of the Week, a three-time GNAC Player of the Week, and finished the season with regional recognition, making the ranks on the D3Hoops.com All-Northeast Regional Third Team.
This season, Javon scored in double-figures in 24-of-25 contests, including 16 times topping 20 points, seven times cresting 30 points, and twice exceeding the 40 point barrier against regional competition. He recorded eight double-double performances and finished the season with a team-best 596 points, 209 rebounds, 61 steals, and 34 blocks, adding 57 assists, while shooting 56.1% from the floor and 73.5% from the line. He became the 10th Lasell men’s basketball player in school history to reach the 1,000 point milestone, achieving that goal against Mount Ida College on January 25th.
Javon also recorded two new all-time records at Lasell this season in steals, with 61, and free throws, with 166. He finished the year as one of the top shooters and rebounders in the league and the country, averaging 23.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest, and finishing the season ranked 9th nationally in points per game.
Over his three year career with the Lasers, Williams has accrued 1,277 total points, 520 total rebounds, 138 steals, 118 assists, and 71 blocks. He holds two all-time career records at Lasell for total steals (138) and total free throws made (314) and currently stands in 5th place amongst Lasell's all-time scorers throughout the program's history. Williams earned regional post-season recognition from ECAC as a Division III New England All-Star, as well as GNAC First Team All-Conference honors during the 2009-2010 season.

This year’s female student athlete of the year award goes to senior women’s lacrosse player, Tina Canavan.
Tina Canavan is a four year starter for the Lasell College women’s lacrosse team who has played in 51 total contests, and started in 46 of those games. During that time she has become the Lasers all-time career leader in assists, completing her career with 57 helpers, adding 184 career goals, for 241 total career points. She also holds the all-time record in three other career categories, including man-down goals with five, draw controls with 185, and ground balls with 154.
She is a three-time GNAC All-Conference honoree, having first earned second team honors in 2008 as a freshman after finishing second on the team in points, with 65, and first on the team in assists, ground balls, and draw controls. She scored a minimum of three points in all but two games that season.
In 2009, she earned a place on the all-conference team again after scoring 46 goals and dishing out 13 assists for 59 season points. She, once again, led the team in assists and draw controls and finished second in goals and ground balls. She scored nine hat tricks during the season and averaged 3.9 points per game.
In 2010, Tina led the Lasers once more, finishing the year with a team-best 68 points on 56 goals and 12 assists, while concluding the year second in ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers. Tina produced her career high for points in a game that season, with 11, as well as goals in a game, with nine, against GNAC rivals Simmons College. She averaged 6.2 points per game over the course of the season, and never contributed less than three points in any contest played.
This year, Tina was selected by the GNAC once again for All-Conference honors. After an injury sidelined her for the first half of the season, Tina came back to score 49 points in just 10 games, netting 31 goals and adding 18 assists. She set a new single-game record for assists in a game at Framingham State, handing out five assists in the contest, and averaged 4.9 points per game, to lead the team. Tina was also named to the GNAC All-Tournament team this season after scoring seven points and grabbing 13 draw controls during the post-season playoffs.
Over her four year career, Tina scored points in all but one contest, which was her very first game as a freshman, and she finished her career scoring points in 50 consecutive contests played, has scored more three or more points in 43-of-51 total contests, and averaged 4.7 points per game throughout her tenure.
Tina will graduate with a degree in Sports Science.
