Meghan Missett - Class of 2012 - Women's Cross Country and Track

Meghan Missett has been a four year member of the Lasell College women’s cross country team, and a three year competitor in women’s track and field. Meghan is from Lowell, MA is majoring in Communications and Creative Advertising. As a member of the Lasell College honors program she is carrying 3.63 GPA, has been named to the Lasell College Dean’s List every semester of her academic career and will graduate in May of 2012.

Meghan was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference team in cross country in both 2010 and 2011, was named the Lasell College cross country Rookie of the Year in 2008, and the team Most Valuable Runner in 2009 and 2010. She has an equally impressive resume on the track, where she holds school records in the 3000M run and 5000M run, as well as being a part of the relay squads that hold the school record in the 4x400M relay and Distance Medley Relay. She has provided valuable leadership for both programs, and was the women’s cross country team captain in 2010 and 2011.

Her impressive athletic resume and outstanding academic efforts only provide a glimpse into the things she has accomplished during her time as a student-athlete at Lasell College. Meghan has been actively involved in several volunteer activities, most notably in March of 2011 when she participated in the Lasell College Alternative Spring Break. The group traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico and learned about the Native American Navajo culture, while performing over 40 hours of community service with eight different organizations. She also volunteers with Lasell non-profit organization Niños de Veracruz during their annual leaf raking campaign, raising money for scholarships and microloans to school children, families and small business in Coatepec, Mexico.

In the summer months, Meghan volunteers her time coaching track and field and teaching healthy eating habits to members of the Greater Lowell Roadrunners Youth Running Camp, and she has completed two half marathons.

This semester Meghan is working with the Cambridge Arts Council as an intern in the Marketing and Public Relations department and she has been working with local musician Amy Black, helping her Music Team improve their marketing and promotional campaigns since the summer of 2011. 

Six Questions with Meghan Missett

What attracted you to Lasell College?

Lasell offered majors I was interested in, the location was perfect, and I was able to compete on the cross country team.

Has there been anything that has been a surprise to you about your experience at Lasell College?

I've found that the professors are very accessible and often have really great experience and connections within their industries.

Is there anything specific you have learned at Lasell College that you think will help you after you graduate?

I think the most important thing is to follow your interests and passions. I took so many classes that were unrelated to my major but still interested me, and they helped me zero in on what I really enjoy and want out of a career and life in general. I think that if you have an interest you should explore it because college is the perfect environment to try things out.

How have your experiences as an athlete added to the learning that has occurred during your time at Lasell?

Being on the cross country team has literally shaped who I am and all of my experiences at Lasell. Being a student-athlete gave me the opportunities to be a leader and to set and attain specific goals, and those are qualities that are important in all aspects of life.

What was your best experience as a student-athlete at Lasell?

I've had so many great experiences as a student-athlete. The best thing about my experiences are the people I've met through the cross country team -- my teammates, my coaches, and even other runners that I've competed against. Being on a cross country team is unique in how you bond with those team members. I've made so many life-long friends that I wouldn't have met otherwise.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

I'm not sure exactly, but I think it would be great to work for a nonprofit arts organization or something in children's media. I'm also planning on joining a Boston-area running club and possibly get into coaching cross country.
