As a senior co-captain of the Lasell College women’s soccer team, Mary Farley knows something about achieving under pressure. This fall with her team looking for their third straight conference championship Farley got on the end of a cross from a teammate and delivered what would be the game-winning goal in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship game. They would ultimately advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament, and giving Lasell College the institutions first-ever victory in NCAA post-season play.
While Farley has been in the middle of the action for a soccer program that is enjoying the most successful three-year run of any women’s team ever at Lasell, that hasn’t been the only thing the Middleboro, Mass. native has been in the middle of.
As an athletic training major, carrying a 3.483 grade point average, her off-seasons are spent being on clinical rotation working with other athletic teams.
“We are assigned to different clinical sites each semester where we can use what we learn in the classroom in an actual athletic training room. These clinical sites range from high schools to the Division I college level because of the number of schools in the Greater Boston area. This is great for networking at each clinical site you get throughout your four years here”.
Farley has also volunteered at the Boston Marathon and other marathons or half marathons, and in the summer she works with nonprofit organizations for young athletes. She also helped start up the Athletic Training Club in 2011 and has served as the Treasurer for the last two years.
What attracted you to Lasell College?
When I was looking at schools I knew that I wanted to be away from home, but close enough to be able to go home if I needed too. My family has always been really close so it's nice to be able to go home on a weekend to see them. Also I wanted to go to a smaller school so that I could have a good teacher to student relationship, and be able to get help from them one on one if I needed that.
What do you hope to do after you graduate?
After I graduate I hope to find a job as an Athletic Trainer at a high school or the D3 college level. I would also like to continue my education on to grad school at some point.
Has there been anything that has been a surprise to you about your experience at Lasell College?
Some of the changes that have been made to this school such as the dining hall, and the new quad by North Hall have been a great surprise to me! I didn't expect a lot of change to happen just in my four years, but it has changed a lot.
Is there anything specific you have learned Lasell College that you think will help you after you have graduated?
There have been so many things I have learned that will help me after I graduate. I feel that everything I have learned in the classroom that I use in my clinical experience will all help me when I am working at my first job.
How have your experiences as an athlete added to the learning that has occurred during your time at Lasell?
As a student athlete you become so close with your teammates that you almost feel like a family, and I feel that the friends I have gained have all taught me something along the way.
What was your best experience as a student-athlete at Lasell?
My best experience as a student-athlete here would have to be winning the GNAC championship three years in a row. It is such an amazing feeling to win something like that with some of your best friends on a team, words can't really describe it!
